Types of window installation – what is worth knowing?

Window installation is a key element of the construction or renovation of any building. The correct way of installing them affects not only the aesthetics, but above all the energy efficiency, comfort of use and durability. It is worth paying attention to the different installation methods that exist on the market. In this article, we will discuss the four basic types of window installation, their advantages and important aspects related to maintaining the installation clearances, which should be from 10 to 20 mm.

Types of window installation:

Standard assembly

Standard installation is the basic method, which involves embedding the window in the wall or flush with it. This method uses anchors and washers or dowels.

Advantages of standard installation:

  • Low price and speed of execution
  • Possibility of easy access to the window during installation

Tight installation - partially or completely in the insulation layer

Tight assembly, often called "warm assembly", is a more advanced method that offers much better thermal and acoustic protection. This method uses polyurethane foam and vapor-proof and vapor-permeable tapes.

What does a tight installation look like?

The tight assembly consists of three main layers:

1. Vapour barrier tape – placed inside, protects the foam from moisture from inside the building.

2. Mounting foam – provides thermal and acoustic insulation.

3. Vapour-permeable tape – placed on the outside, allows moisture to evaporate and protects the foam from outside water.

Thanks to the use of this type of insulation, tight assembly effectively minimizes the risk of thermal bridges. Maximum insulation and minimization of thermal bridges occurs when the window protrudes from the wall by 50% of the window frame width. Above this value, i.e., for example, flushing the window with the insulation layer increases thermal bridges by 80%.

Advantages of tight installation:

  • High air and water tightness
  • Reducing the risk of water vapor condensation
  • Protection against moisture and mold

Installation in the insulation layer

Installation in the insulation layer involves partially extending the window (maximum 80% window width) into the building's insulation layer.

What does installation in the insulation layer look like?

The window is installed in such a way that part of it is in the insulation layer, which allows for better protection against heat loss. In this method, mounting foam is still used, but it does not provide as high insulation as full extension.

Advantages of installation in the insulation layer:

  • Better protection against thermal bridges
  • Allows to maintain proper assembly clearances

Mounting on consoles

Console mounting is one of the most expensive, but also the most effective methods. It allows the entire window to extend into the building's insulation layer, which significantly improves insulation.

What does installation on consoles look like?

The window is mounted on special consoles that allow it to be fully extended outwards, which leads to a significant improvement in insulation parameters.

Advantages of mounting on consoles:

  • The best thermal and acoustic insulation
  • High tightness
  • Minimizing the risk of thermal bridges

 Maintaining assembly clearances

One of the key aspects of any type of window installation is maintaining the appropriate installation clearances. They should usually be between 10 and 20 mm.

Why is mounting clearance important?

  • Thermal insulation - Too little clearance can lead to the formation of thermal bridges.
  • Ventilation- Proper clearance allows air to circulate, which is important for preventing moisture.
  • Movement of materials - Buildings are in motion and the assembly clearance allows for free movement of materials, which minimizes the risk of cracks or damage.

When deciding on installation, it is worth consulting a specialist who will help you choose the right method, adapted to the specifics of the building and individual needs. Proper window installation is an investment that will pay off in the form of comfort and savings on bills.
